Liquor consumption in Kashmir at an all-time high

It's a myth that Kashmir does not touch liquor. Over 10 lakh liquor bottles were consumed in the Valley in the last two years alone. This in a state that dashed liquor baron Vijay Mallya's plan to restart cultivation of hop — used in the manufacture of beer — in the state. Chief minister Omar Abdullah was categorical about not doing anything against the religious sentiments of the people.

Srinagar, Mar 4 : All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leaders on Wednesday strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket players during the second Test match at Lahore in Pakistan.

Terming the incident as a ''heinous act of terrorism'', senior leader of Hurriyat Conference Javed Ahmed Mir said, "We are saddened at the attack on these cricket players. If the players are attacked and injured with bullets, then it''s an inhuman act and any condemnation is less."

The attack was also criticised widely by people in Kashmir, who demanded that the perpetrators of the attack should be punished.

“The Centre must provide a safe passage for foreign ultras, so that they can stop their work and come back to the mainstream. Most of them belong to other countries and they have to go back,” Omar said.

Jammu traders body share cross-LoC trade concerns with EU team

Jammu, Mar. 1 : A delegation of the European Union (EU) Troika mission, headed by Czech Ambassador Hynek Kmonicek, visited the Chamber of Commerce, Jammu, today and discussed issues related to cross-border trade.

An appeal was made to the visiting delegation to exert pressure on Pakistan to remove impediments to cross-LOC trade.

In a memorandum submitted to the visiting delegation at a function here, the Chamber of Commerce, Jammu, accused Pakistan of not reciprocating to measures initiated by India and the Jammu and Kashmir Government to boost trade between the two Kashmirs.

The traders also demanded that cross-LoC trade should not be restricted to two days a week, but should be opened throughout the week.
