German government to buy Hypo Real Estate shares, takeover planned Munich  - The German federal government is to buy shares of ailing mortgage lender Hypo Real Estate (HRE), the bank announced Saturday.

The state is to initially recapitalize the Munich-based financier by purchasing an 8.7-per-cent stake in the business, HRE said in a statement.

In the long term however, the German government bank bailout agency SoFFin is to take complete control of the bank, HRE said.

Bayern Munich face tough fight over Ribery, says Hoeness Munich  - Bayern Munich face a hard fight in keeping France midfielder Franck Ribery who could become the focus of increasing attention from other European clubs, general manager Uli Hoeness said in a newspaper interview Friday.

Bayern have repeatedly insisted they have no interest in selling the 25-year-old international who is reportedly wanted by Barcelona and big-spending Manchester City.

Hoeness told Bild newspaper Ribery had two years to go on his contract and he and his family were happy in Munich.

Court partially lifts ban on Nazi-era newspapers Munich  - A German court on Wednesday partially lifted a ban on a British publisher giving out reprints of old Nazi newspapers.

The restriction was imposed by the state of Bavaria, which argued it had copyright over the newspapers.

The district court in Munich ruled that Peter McGee's popular history series Zeitungszeugen could include reprints dating to the end of 1938 but not later.

Earlier this year, police confiscated thousands of copies of Zeitungszeugen that contained republished facsimiles of Nazi-era papers.

BMW looking to fight for F1 title in 2009, says Theissen Munich - BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen has set his sights on BMW-sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica fighting for the Formula One title in 2009, starting with strong performances in the weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

"The impression from testing has been good so we are going into the season feeling strong and with high expectations," Theissen told German Press Agency dpa.
