Assad sees hope for future, claims Israel not serious about peace Beirut  - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Monday that Israel is not serious about achieving peace in the region at this time, but expressed hope for the future.

"It was obvious that Israel only understands the language of force," Assad said, adding that the Jewish state was not serious about the peace negotiations.

In an exclusive interview with Hezbollah-run television al-Manar, Assad said he sees "hope for compromises in the region and not wars" in the future.

ItalyRome - Speaking ahead of a Middle East visit, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Syria can play an important role in ensuring the success of an Egyptian-brokered end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

"Divisions have emerged" between Hamas representatives in the Gaza Strip and the militant Islamist group's exiled leadership in Syria over a ceasefire proposal to end the Israeli military offensive, Frattini said Thursday in an interview with Adnkronos International

Syria, Nepal for enhanced cooperation with India in fertiliser sector: Paswan

Ram Vilas PaswanNew Delhi, Jan. 15 : Syria and Nepal today said that they were interested in enhancing cooperation with India in the fertiliser sector.

Delegations from these two countries conveyed this message to Chemicals, Fertilizers and Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.

Paswan welcomed both delegations. The Syrian delegation was led by Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Sufian Al Alao, while the Nepalese team was led by that country''s Commerce and Supplies Minister Rajendra Mahato.

Syria's al-Assad says Hamas might accept ceasefire Damascus/Tel Aviv  - Hamas, the Islamist group controlling the Gaza Strip, might support a ceasefire under certain conditions, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Wednesday in an interview broadcast by the BBC.

"They (Hamas) are for the ceasefire. But when we say ceasefire, we don't say ceasefire for just three days. It has to be sustainable," said al-Assad.

India, Syria sign MoU to provide framework for cooperation in oil and gas sector

India, Syria FlagNew Delhi, Jan. 14 : India and Syria on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will establish an institutional framework for bilateral cooperation in the oil and natural gas sectors.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora and his Syrian counterpart Sufian Al Alao signed the MoU.

The two countries are keen to expand cooperation in several areas, particularly in projects relating to Enhanced Oil Recovery/Improved Oil Recovery in the oil fields of Syria, and Information Technology.
