Seven feared dead as Airbus A320 crashes into sea

Paris - One person has died and six were missing and feared dead after an Airbus A320 aircraft crashed into the Mediterranean Sea during a maintenance flight, France Info radio reported on Thursday.

The aircraft, which belonged to the carrier Air New Zealand, plunged into the waters just off the coast after taking off in late afternoon with a crew of seven from the French city of Perpignan, where the plane was being overhauled.

One body has been recovered from the water. French Navy boats, planes and a helicopter have been deployed to the site of the crash, but a spokesman for the French coast guard said there were no survivors.

Airbus was unable to confirm the report. "We still have no certain information" about the incident, Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath said. (dpa)
