The 3 Idiots starring actor Aamir Khan really swept away the 55th of the Filmfare Awards function by winning a total of six awards.

Rajkumar Hirani won the award for best director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male) went to Boman Irani and the Abhijat Joshi and Rajkumar Hirani received the story for the best story.

Additionally, Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi were awarded for the Best Screenplay while Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra won the award for the dialogue.

Actor Aamir Khan did not attend the function as he usually does not attend such events. Shah Rukh and Saif Ali Khan who were the hosts of the event joked about his absence and auctioned only two of three 'bums' from 3 Idiots as "Aamir Khan doesn't come for award ceremonies and didn't even want his bum here." They awarded the bums to John Abraham for Dostana 2 and 3.

The best actor and actress went to Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan for their performances in the movie paa. Khayyam received the life time achievement award from Asha Bhosle. The best female debut award was given to Zoya Akhtar by her father and brother.

The award function took place in Yash Raj Studios in Andheri, Mumbai.
