Slumdog mania pushes CD price

Slundog Millionaire's Oscar sweep has got the pirated CD vendors smiling. The renewed interest in the movie has led to rise in demand for pirated version of the movie. And vendors have doubled the price to cash in on the craze.

Both Hindi and English versions of the movie are in demand nowadays. A pirated DVD of any movie is usually available at Rs25 to Rs35. But vendors are now selling the pirated version of Slumdog Millionaire at Rs50 and above.

Often a single DVD has a combination of movies in it and vendors say the most popular combination right now is that of Abhishek Bachchan-starrer Delhi 6 and Slumdog Millionaire. After the release of Ghajini, vendors say sales of pirated DVDs had come down as no other film had managed to perform well at the box office. But things started looking up with the release of Billo and Delhi-6.

There are many takers for pirated version of the two movies, but vendors insist that it is Slumdog Millionaire that is still ruling the roost. A vendor on the condition of anonymity said that the demand for the Hindi version of the Oscar-winning movie is high. The sales had started picking up once the movie got nominated for the Oscars but once it emerged as a winner the vendors upped the price.

Jigar Thakkar, a movie buff, said he watched the movie in a multiplex but wanted to watch it at home, too. "When I enquired about the pirated version of Slumdog Millionaire, I realised that the vendors were charging exorbitantly for the pirated DVD of the movie," said Thakkar. He now plans to wait for the hype to die so that he can buy a DVD at a reasonable rate.
