Lahore, Mar. 28 : After the disqualification of former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on February 25, no encounter has taken place in Lahore, while 16 alleged criminals had been killed in the first 56 days of 2009.
According to The News sources, policemen were hesitating to become proactive and conduct encounters after the ouster of the Shahbaz government due to large-scale criticism by the civil society and non-governmental organizations.
Islamabad, Mar. 23: Following Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raja Gilani’s reconciliation meeting with PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, the Shahbaz Sharif government in Punjab may be restored within a week, The News reported.
The Pakistan Government will move the Supreme Court to grant a stay order against the earlier decision to disqualify the Sharif brothers on February 24.
Islamabad, Mar. 20 : The Pakistan Supreme Court's Registrar Office has returned the review petition of the Sharif brothers' disqualification case saying that it lacked the necessary documents.
Lahore, Mar. 16 : After days of political bedlam in the country and verbal confrontation between the PML-N leadership and President Asif Ali Zardari, the Pakistan Muslim League -Nawaz, seems to have suddenly changed gear into mercy mode.
Following the Pakistan government's announcement of reinstating the judiciary and Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, PML-N leader Shahbaz Sharif said his party was ready to reconcile with Zardari.
Lahore, Mar 13: PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif has said his party leadership could not be intimidated by death threats, adding that and he and his brother Nawaz Sharif were ready to sacrifice their lives a thousand times for the restoration of the judiciary.
He was responding, through a statement, to an Interior Ministry letter delivered to him through the Punjab Government advising him and Nawaz Sharif to avoid public exposure because of a threat to their lives.
Lahore, Mar. 7: Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) leader and deposed Punjab Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif has charged President Asif Ali Zardari of fooling Pakistani civilians.
Addressing a public rally here, Sharif said Zardari is making mockery of democracy in the country.
“President Zardari repeatedly mocked the people of Pakistan. The nation will not forgive him for his sins,” The News quoted Sharif, as saying.
