Terror resurfaces in Assam

AssamGuwahati, Nov 4: Terror has resurfaced in Assam with the October 30 serial bomb blasts claiming the lives of more than sixty people and leaving over 200 injured. That figure has since gone up to 80 dead and over 300 injured.

First of its kind in Assam, the eleven serial blasts in the four districts of Assam - Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta – has left the whole nation shocked. Who is behind this bloody attack on humanity is not known but the usual suspect seems to be the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), which has been hobnobbing with Bangladesh based jehadi elements for quite sometime.

Out of the eleven blasts, five blasts took place in Guwahati itself. According to reports, the ULFA and the Bangladesh based Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HuJI) were behind the heinous act.

Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal said: "As far as the Central Government is concerned, we have provided paramilitary forces to the Assam Government and we have been reiterating time and again to the state government that they have to be alert because there are organizations like United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) that carry out these terror incidents time and again.”

“We hope that the Assam Government seriously investigates the matter and we shall comment only after the report is submitted," added Jaiswal.

Local residents have termed the serial blasts as a heinous act on the part of the perpetrators. "When we came to the terror spot there was fire everywhere and the cars were in flames. I cannot say anything more, it was something which I cannot explain," said Krishna Sharma, an eye witness.

The ULFA has suffered major losses due to the desertion of large number of cadres and the marginalization of the group among the common masses. People believe that the fringe elements of the militant outfit, which is based in Bangladesh, are acting in desperation in conjunction with jehadi elements like HuJI to create terror in the state, which is on the path of peace and development.

For quite some time peace has been ruling the state and it seemed that the people of the state had found respite from the decades of violence. However, the serial blasts again bring the specter of violence to the forefront. (ANI)
