Use of grapheme could make computers faster

Scientists from Manchester University have found that use of ‘grapheme’, which is the world’s thinnest substance, could make mobile phones, computers and host of other electronics devices, work much faster.

The researchers, who discovered the grapheme at the University of Manchester in 2004, have revealed more details about the electronics properties of the substance that is made of a single layer of carbon atoms.

The study indicates that researchers might be able to develop super fast mobile phones and computers based on grapheme in the future. The researchers from the universities of Manchester, Madrid and Moscow, studies the effects of interactions between electrons on the electronic properties of graphene.

The team used graphene devices made by suspending sheets of graphene in a vacuum. This eliminates scattering mechanisms for electrons in grapheme and improves the effect of electron interaction. The electrons in this material are very unique and thus possess different properties.

Professor Geim and Professor Novoselov had won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010 for "groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene". They have been working together for a decade and on Monday they used Scotch tape to peel away layers of carbon from a piece of graphite and were left with grapheme.

Professor Novoselov said: "Although the exciting physics which we have found in this particular

experiment may have an immediate implementation in practical electronic devices, the further understanding of the electronic properties of this material will bring us a step closer to the development of graphene electronics."
