Vitali Klitschko agrees to take on Haye

Vitali KlitschkoLondon - World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko will fight British challenger David Haye in London next summer, it was reported Monday.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted Klitschko's manager Bernd Boente as saying the fight could take place at Wembley stadium.

"We agreed to do the fight next summer in London," Boente was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"It could take place at Wembley, but maybe it's too big. I'd personally prefer Chelsea. I've been there a couple of times and I'm a fan."

The agreement was made after Klitschko's younger brother Wladimir, 32, retained his IBF and WBO heavyweight belts in Mannheim on Saturday.

Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight world champion, told the BBC he was at ringside "to watch Wladimir Klitschko bore everybody to sleep with his jab" before agreeing to a deal to fight Vitali Klitschko.

"I have said from day one I am going to be the undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champion. I have not disappointed. I am not cherry-picking, I am going after the most dangerous fighter on the planet," he said.

Haye said terms had been agreed for the fight and the two sides "just need to dot the i's and cross the t's."

Haye, 28, knocked out American Monte Barrett in only his second heavyweight fight last month after stepping up a division, and immediately called for a fight with either of the Ukrainian Klitschko brothers.

Vitali Klitschko, 37, came out of retirement to reclaim the WBC belt in a one-sided fight with Nigerian Samuel Peter in October.

Boente was quoted by the BBC as saying the fight against Haye would be "a very big fight across the world" and one which would be of interest to the US television networks HBO and Showtime.

Vitali Klitschko has a scheduled mandatory defence against German-based Cuban Juan Carlos Gomez, possibly in March, but Boente said this would not prove a stumbling block.

"We'll talk to the WBC, but we'll go ahead with or without them. Vitali is the heavyweight champion of the world and this fight is bigger than the WBC belt," he said. (dpa)
