Walmart Taking Steps to reclaim its position as low-price leader

Amid stiff competition and slow sales in the US, Walmart is trying to reclaim its position as the low-price leader. The world’s largest retailer, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has asked suppliers to reduce advertising spending in its stores.

General trend is makers of consumer products like laundry detergent spend a portion of their budget to market their products at Walmart. They do marketing through store displays and online ads in social media.

Now, Walmart has asked them to not spend money on such activities. In fact, it would be better if they reinvest some of that money. Deisha Barnett, a Walmart spokeswoman, has confirmed the strategy and the recent proposal is more of a ‘reinvigorated focus’.

This week, Walmart updated its investors about the strategy. The company has shared a plan as to how prices can be reduced while improving the experience of shoppers by the time holiday 2015 shopping season comes.

Greg Foran, CEO of Walmart’s US business, is heading the action. Foran was of the view that they want to see improvement in their stores this year. Foran has been assessing every part of the business and is taking steps to improve business.

From improving the freshness of the produce to ensure merchandise is being unloaded on the selling floor and not being piled up in the backroom. Other measures being taken by Walmart are to reduce the price of products approaching the expiration date, a strategy that will save $500 million annually.

The company is also focussing on how it chooses its products. Through this measure, Walmart can reduce the price. Walmart said that the steps it thought would turn out productive did not result the same and now it is working to sort out the problem.
