Jakarta - The official death toll from last week's devastating earthquake in Indonesia's West Sumatra rose to 739 Thursday, while 296 people remained unaccounted for.
Data issued by the National Disaster Management Agency said the September 30 magnitude-7.6 earthquake also left 2,219 people injured and flattened or damaged more than 100,000 buildings.
With many bodies remaining under the ruins of buildings, officials said the death toll could eventually pass 3,000, almost triple the United Nations' estimate of 1,100 victims.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) revised its preliminary emergency appeal upwards and is now seeking a total of 18.5 million dollars to assist 100,000 quake survivors over the next six months.
