Wineries suffer slowdown effect
The peak season from October to December had low demand
Wine baron Shamrao Chougule said the wine industry and grape growers are in trouble due to the economic slowdown.
He was speaking during the inauguration of Indian Grape Processing Board in the city on Wednesday. He said there is maximum sale of wine during the period of October to December. "The sale of wine was affected due to the economic slowdown during this period."
He said that around eight to 12 months are required to produce wine and take it to the market. "As enough wine was not sold, the produce was lying in storage. Hence, grapes were not bought at many places for the production of wine. Grapes are lying in many farms. This is a serious problem for the industry."
Another wine producer Hambirrao Phadtare said there are about 30 wineries in Nashik district and almost all are on the verge of becoming sick units.
He said the problem regarding the wine industry has worsened due to trade barriers in various states. Wine producers have to register their brands in every state they intend to sell in. They have to pay heavy fee for the same. Thus, it becomes difficult for them to sell wine outside the state in spite of good demand from other states.
