"Big Risks" to be brought by Giant database

The Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas said, UK would be facing significant risks, if giant databases of personal information are created.

Thomas is of the view that it might raise the risk of data going missing and bad decisions made based on people's files.

As of now, 30 "serious" breaches of data protection law by the government and other bodies are being investigated by Mr Thomas. Thomas is planning to advise that the least amount of data possible should be held, at his speech at the Royal Society of Arts in London.

Recently, a proposal to generate a huge database, recording all internet and telephone traffic was defended by the government. While this plan has been criticized by the opposition parties, since it could see details of every phone call, e-mail and text message sent in the UK, recorded and kept for two years.

In his speech, Mr. Thomas will also stress upon taking greater responsibility for looking after the data by the companies, government departments, councils and other holders of information. Other than this, he would also suggest them to hold minimum data and also warn them that they should be prepared to face tougher penalties when any information is mishandled.

The new figures collected have shown that the cases of data loss are increasing.
