‘Deshdrohi’ ban sparks off protests in Jharkhand

DeshdrohiFollowing the news of Maharashtra government's 60-day ban of Kamal Khan's film, 'Deshdrohi' - under Section 6 of the Bombay Cinema Regulation Act, 1963 - Jharkhand's Lok Janshakti Party(LJP) activists protested against the ban.

This controversial film, which is directed by Jagdish Sharma, features the film's producer and Bhojpuri actor Kamaal Khan, and other actors like Gracy Singh, Kim Sharma, Aman Verma, Ranjit, Kader Khan, Raza Mura and Manoj Tiwari.

The Government of Maharashtra had banned the screening of 'Deshdrohi' in the state, as it feared that its theme, of north Indian migrants struggling in Mumbai, would bring about breakdown of law and order in the state.

The protesters shouted slogans demanding ban of Bollywood films in the state, until the Maharashtra Government lifts the ban on the screening of 'Deshdrohi'. They also shouted slogans against Raj Thackeray, Chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who had some time back started a campaign against the North Indians staying in Mumbai city.

The agitated activists disrupted the screening of Hindi films in Ranchi on Friday, and tore the posters of 'Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi'. Nearly 24 LJP workers were arrested by the police following the disturbances, but were released later.

Producer Kamaal Khan said 'Deshdrohi' deals with the injustice and discrimination meted out to the North Indians in Mumbai. He intends moving the Bombay high court on Saturday with a demand to lift the ban on the film.
