Asian rights body''s five steps to end systemic failures in India

AssamGuwahati, Dec. 9 : India is making the same mistakes in handling its internal conflicts as it did in tackling the external attacks on Mumbai.

This is one of the findings of the Asian Council of Human Right''s in its India Human Rights Report 2008.

The report underlines that human rights violations by the State, combined with the failure of State institutions to address these violations, are fuelling internal conflict.

Assam Government takes new measures to stop infiltration

Guwahati, Nov 22 : Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogai announced new measures to check illegal immigration from Bangladesh.

Addressing the media here on Friday, Gogai said, "The Centre has approved the setting up of two foreigner detention camps at Mankachar in Dhubri and Mahisasur in Karimganj District. Infiltrators declared as foreigners by the Foreigner Tribunals would be detained in those camps.

"The Centre has sanctioned two more India Reserve Battalions as a second line of defence along the 270 kilometre-long Assam-Bangladesh boundary. Steps are being taken to install floodlights in border areas during the night hours," he added

Thousands protest against recent bomb blasts in Assam

AssamGuwahati, Nov. 19 : Thousands of people from all walks of life recently participated in a rally held here to protest against and demanded action against militancy and fundamentalist forces in Assam.

It was for the first time such a huge congregation was witnessed in the north-east.

Shouting slogans like “We want peace”, over 30,000people took to streets of Guwahati to express their resentment and condemn widespread militancy.

India’s first ever museum on explosives in Assam

Such inquisitive people can now educate themselves by visiting the Forensic Science Laboratory in Guwahati which has instituted India’s first ever museum on explosives.

Forensic Science Laboratory in Guwahati is meant to develop methodologies and facilitate in probing blast explosions in detail and thereby preventing such incidents in future.

President Patil’s visit brings hope to northeast

President Patil during her five-day visit inaugurated several infrastructural and developmental projects in the region.

In the first leg of her visit, President Patil was in Assam. She laid foundation stone of the Tezpur Medical College. Just a few months ago Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had inaugurated the Jorhat Medical College.
