IAS, IPS officers to act as observers for general polls in UPLucknow, Mar 6 : Chief Election Commissioner of India N Gopalaswami has asserted that Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers would act as observers during the ensuing general elections.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday at the end of a brief tour of Uttar Pradesh by the members of Election Commission, Gopalaswami clarified the stance taken by the Election Commission on the reported scarcity of IAS officers for observer duty.

SP, RLD, BJP leaders join BSP in UPLucknow, Mar. 4 : Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, some sitting MLAs and MLCs of Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal and BJP have resigned from the state assembly and council to join the Bahujan Samaj Party.

SP MLAs Gauri Shanker from Malihabad and Dhani Ram Verma from Auraiya, RLD MLA Kadir Rana from Morana and BJP MLA Rajiv Trehan alias Rajiv Channa from Moradabad (west) resigned from the house and their parties.

On Wednesday, the MLAs submitted their resignation to Assembly Speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar, which was accepted.

Mulayam meets Muslim clerics to woo community

Mulayam Singh YadavDeoband (UP), Mar 4 : As political parties gear up for the battle of the ballot in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav had a meeting with Muslim clerics on Wednesday to woo the community.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, Mulayam said he has explained thr party''s point to the clerics.

"We have discussed a little about Kalyan Singh with Maulana Marghoob-Ur Rahman). We have put forward our points with him and he was satisfied with our stand," said Yadav.

EC to review poll preparedness in UP today

EC to review poll preparedness in UP todayNew Delhi, Mar 4: Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami and two Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S Y Quraishi will visit Lucknow on Tuesday evening to review the poll preparedness for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

During their two-day visit, the team will meet the top State Government officials.

According to official sources, the Commission is scheduled to hold a separate meeting with the chief secretary and director general of police.
