District court lawyers strike against the Criminal Procedure Code

India MapNew Delhi, Feb 3 : District court lawyers across the country struck work on Tuesday, to protest changes in the code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc), according to which the police cannot arrest the accused committing offences punishable up to seven years of imprisonment.

The court matters today had to be adjourned, as the lawyers did not appear before the presiding officers.

Secretary Delhi Bar Association Jaiveer Singh Chauhan said the lawyers would keep intensifying their agitation further until the revocation of the amendments.

He informed that the fifteen high court advocates have also joined the protests.

Supreme Court permits SEBI to interrogate Ramalinga RajuNew Delhi, Feb 3 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday permitted the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to grill Ramalinga Raju, former chief of embattled Satyam Computer Services Limited and his brother, Rama Raju.

Both will be interrogated by SEBI''s investigator, Sunil Kumar at the Hyderabad jail over the next three days.

On Monday, Goolam E. Vahanvati, Solicitor General and also Counsel for SEBI, submitted the request before a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan.

S.S. Khurana takes over as Railway Board Chairman

S.S. Khurana takes over as Railway Board ChairmanNew Delhi, Feb 3: S. S. Khurana has taken over as the new Chairman, Railway Board and ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Railways.

Prior to this, he was holding the post of Member (Staff), Railway Board since December 28, 2007.

Born in 1950, Khurana did Electrical Engineering from University of Roorkee.

As officer of 1971 batch of the Indian Railway Service, Khurana has worked in various capacities in Indian Railways.

This meeting is expected to discuss preparatory measures and electoral issues for the coming Lok Sabha elections, which can be held between April 8 and May 15.

Rana said, "We got the licence for GSM services last year and within 11 months the company has launched the services in almost the entire country." He said that its low-tariff and affordable services besides good coverage, that are attracting people toward Reliance.

Indian markets down by nearly 4 per cent

The 30-share sensitive Sensex index of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 9066.70 points, down 3.8 per cent.

The broader 50-share Nifty of the National Stock Exchange ended the day at 2760.95 points, 3.9 per cent down.

Renewed concern about the deteriorating economic scene in the United States and shrinking factory output in Australia weighed down the markets.

There was selling across sectors with realty, metals and banking stocks the major losers.
