AMC raids illegal clinics, seals 27

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's (AMC) health department has came down heavily on doctors not adhering to norms of medical practice, including the system to dispose biomedical waste. The officials on Friday raided and sealed a total of 27 clinics in Rakhial, Rajpur, Amraiwadi, Bhaipura, Odhav, Vastral, Behrampura and Maninagar areas. It also sealed two warehouses for recycling medical wastes. Earlier on Thursday, the civic body had sealed 15 clinics, said an AMC official.

In a drive to trace roots of non-compliance to proper disposal of biomedical waste, the AMC health officials raided around 750 clinics, of which around 461 clinics have been served notices. The civic body officials have also informed the police about malpractices by five doctors in Nava Wadaj and Juna Wadaj areas and a complaint has been filed in accordance with the Gujarat Medical Practitioners Act 1963's clause 30.

While 14 doctors, of the 27 clinics sealed, had a doctorate degree of homeopathy and were found practising allopathy, the remaining 13 doctors had no arrangements for biomedical waste disposal.

Even in the Central Zone, four doctors have been served notices. This apart, factories in the city suspected of recycling medical wastes are also being raided. In fact, sources said, some doctors did not open their clinics fearing raids by AMC officials.
