Assam journalists call for peace in the regionfeGuwahati, March 27 : Following various problems being faced by journalists fraternity in Assam, especially during conflicts, recently a meet was organised here to highlight such issues, and discuss scribes' role in bringing peace in the State.

The second state-level convention of the Journalists Federation of Assam was held in Guwahati recently.

One of the key issues that the convention pondered was the violence unleashed by United Liberation Front of Asom (or ULFA) that has disrupted normal life in the state.

Journalists, on this occasion, appealed to the ULFA leaders to shun violence.

"We have a neutral stand regarding the ULFA issue. They should do it through non-violence and lay down their arms. We cannot let them go on killing innocent people mindlessly and bursting bombs in the state," said Kunjab Rajbonshi, General Secretary of the Journalist federation of Assam.

"I think they should come forward with open mind to sacrifice some of their so call `flexible demands'. They should sacrifice some of their demands those, which are actually not acceptable in a democratic elected democracy," said Jatindra Nath Borgohain, a writer.

Besides, issues on the security of the media in the state were also taken up. The journalists discussed ways in which they could help the state move forward on the path to progress.

The views and opinions expressed during the convention showed how the society in Assam is fed up of violence and unrest caused by groups like the ULFA. Everyone said the need of the hour is normalcy and peace returning to the state. (ANI)
