
Detroit-based Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories Ltd. has announced that its generic drug Methimazole has been granted final approval by U.S. health. The tablet used for treatment of hyperthyroidism will be sold in 5mg and 10mg strengths by the company under brand name Northyx.
Hyperthyroidism is caused by over production of thyroid hormone and Methimazole has proved to be an effective drug for the treatment.
The brand Northyx is owned by Cedar Pharmaceuticals while the manufacturing is carried out by Centrix Pharmaceutical Inc.
US Food and Drug Administration has marked Methimazole equivalent to reference drug listed in the Orange Book.
Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories is subsidiary of India-based Sun Pharmaceuticals. The company stock was trading higher at Rs 960 after the news came.
