Chidambaram to visit Jharkhand today
New Delhi, Jan 31: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will visit Jharkhand today to asses the law and order in naxal-affected states.
According to sources, during his day-long visit, Chidambaram will meet Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibtey Razi and other senior officials, including official of the CRPF.
His visit to Jharkhand comes following his assurance to the Chief Ministers of the naxal-affected states that he will provide all kinds of assistance to them to tackle the Naxal menace at a meeting in New Delhi on January 7.
He had also said that the Chief Ministers of all seven states- Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal, which have been severely affected by Maoist violence have agreed on a "joint action" plan to deal with the problem.
With thirteen of India''s twenty nine states affected by Maoist violence, the insurgency''s intensification over the last two years is attracting both national and international attention.
Over 70 districts in the country are currently affected by Left wing extremism, which has been described by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a "virus" and the biggest internal security threat.
In continuing naxal violence in around a dozen states, over 400 people, including over 150 security men, have been killed so far this year. (ANI)
