EC says 'No' to any change in J&K poll schedule

EC says 'No' to any change in J&K poll scheduleThe Election Comsission has said 'NO' to the demand for postponement of polling in J&K areas that have received heavy snow fall.

“There is no change in the schedule for the first phase of J&K,” the EC clarified on Friday evening.

The Commission had put in place contingency plans to move election officials and staff on the day of polling.

“The Commission has not taken any decision to postpone the first phase,” Deputy Election Commissioner R. Bhattacharyya told.

The first phase of polling in J&K, scheduled for November 17, will cover 10 constituencies, mostly in snowbound areas of Poonch, Kargil, Bandipora and Leh districts.

Earlier National Conference Chief Farooq Abdullah demended for a change in poll schedule in view of the severe weather condition.

“The EC should take a serious note of the weather conditions and reschedule the polls...the candidates need to approach the electorate but with this kind of early snowfall it is not possible to campaign,” NC chief Farooq Abdullah complained.
