Public meet to discuss proposal on March 25

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has proposed an average tariff hike of 51.75% for consumers, excluding those from the below poverty line (BPL). The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has to approve the proposal.

A public hearing to discuss the tariffs to be imposed on over 9.5 lakh consumers from the island city will be held at the World Trade Centre on March 25.

BEST has proposed an additional surcharge of 60paise per unit. The surcharge is to recover fuel adjustment charges (DNA, Nov 5, 2008).

This is the second increase in tariff that Mumbaikars will be subjected to within a year (April 2008-March 2009).

Repair invoices for Pune Police motor transport dept's 760 vehicles raise queries 

Huge amounts spent by the Pune Police motor transport department on the repair, maintenance and servicing of their fleet of approximately 760 vehicles has come to light and is indicative of a fraud on the state exchequer. 

A scrutiny of some bills in possession with DNA revealed that in September 2008, the Pune Police Motor Transport (MT) department spent Rs14,956 on a single servicing of a Hero Honda CD Dawn motorcycle (bill no. 168 dated 23/9/08). 

The two-wheeler (MH-12 BS-1905) was purchased in January, 2003. 

Dalit youth stoned to death in Aurangabad village

Upper-caste men allegedly punish him for attacking a Maratha girl

The simmering Dalit-Maratha tension in Pal village of Aurangabad district took a gruesome twist on Monday when villagers allegedly tied a 20-year-old youth to an electric pole and stoned him to death for "attacking" a girl from their community.

According to the police, angry villagers tortured Rohidas Pandit Tupe by rubbing salt and chilli powder into his wounds.
