Hamas says Gaza needs rebuilding efforts, Israel should pay

Hamas & IsraelGaza - A Hamas official in Gaza called on Saturday for international recovery and reconstruction efforts, adding that the Islamist movement would try to sue Israel in international courts for damages caused over the past 22 days of conflict in the enclave.

Taher el-Noono, spokesman of the Hamas government in Gaza, said in a written statement sent to reporters that "after the end of the aggression, Gaza needs to be rebuilt and the leaders of the occupation should be sued."

Since Israel began Operation Cast Lead on December 27, more than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed and over 5,200 wounded.

Much of Hamas' infrastructure in Gaza has been destroyed by Israel, including the military wing's facilities as well as police and government installations. In addition, hundreds of houses and other buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Israel's airforce has also targeted tunnels running under the Gaza-Egypt border, used to bring goods, including weapons, but also basic supplies, into the coastal enclave.

Israel launched its military campaign in response to constant rocket fire from Gaza on southern towns and cities in the Jewish State. (dpa)
