Hamburg  - Bundesliga clubs SV Hamburg and Schalke 04 on Tuesday advanced to the quarter-finals of the German cup with victories against lower league opposition.

Hamburg beat second division 1860 Munich 3-1, while Schalke managed a 4-1 victory at third division club Carl Zeiss Jena.

In Hamburg Munich goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner gifted the home side the opening goal just before the break when his pass to Mathieu Beda, was intercepted by Piotr Trochowski, whose ball found Ivica Olic.

Although the Croatian international was in an offside position the referee allowed play to continue and Olic made no mistake in pushing the ball past Tschaumer.

Olic added two more late in the second half to give his side a comfortable victory.

Daniel Bierofka scored a consolation goal for the visitors two minutes from the end.

Schalke were in control in Jena from early on after Jefferson Farfan scored with a backheel in the 14th minute.

The Peruvian scored his side's second in the 66th minute, before Andre Schembri pulled one back for the side from Eastern Germany two minutes later.

Any hopes Jena had of coming back into the game were dashed three minutes later when Ivan Rakitic made it 3-1 for the Bundesliga side, who then had German international Gerald Asamoh sent off.

Jena were also reduced to ten men when Marco Riemer was red carded for a foul as last man.

Schalke substitute Kevin Kuranyi scored his side's final goal two minutes into injury time.

Later Tuesday, Mainz travel to SC Freiburg in an all-second division clash, while the defending champions Bayern Munich are away to VfB Stuttgart. dpa
