Lalu condoles demise of MIM president Owaisi

New Delhi, Sept 30 : Union Minister of Railways Lalu Prasad Yadav today expressed deep grief at the sad demise of Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) president Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi who passed away in Hyderabad last night after a prolonged illness. He was 76.

In his condolence message, Yadav said that Sultan Owaisi was among the very few who had been elected for six consecutive terms as Member of Parliament.

“Owaisi, with whom he had an opportunity to work with, was a very good orator and he fought for the cause of minorities and downtrodden of the society,” he added

Yadav said Sultan Owaisi devotion for the economic development and educational advancement of the minorities will be remembered for long. The void created by his demise would be difficult to fill.

Owaisi was popularly known as ''Salare-e-Millat'', (commander of the community) and represented the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency for two decades. He was first elected to parliament in 1984 and re-elected in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 1999.

Owaisi began his political career in his youth and was first elected to the state legislative assembly in 1962. He continued to be a state legislator till he was elected to parliament.

MIM has one MP and five state legislators from the old city, where Muslims are an overwhelming majority. (ANI)
