Medical SEZ To Come Up In Elavur, Tamil Nadu

The Frontier Lifeline Hospital’s Frontier Mediville Medical City project has got the status of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and become the first Indian hospital to be awarded the SEZ status.

Frontier Mediville Medical City, which will be set up with a total investment of Rs 1,500 crore, is likely to be funded through internal accruals and grants from a range of organisations. It will be completed within five years.

Dr. K M Cherian, the founder of the hospital, said, “We are also open to private equity funding.”

The medical city is to be set up in a 367 acre campus in Elavur, near Gummidipondi, Tamil Nadu. It will offer medical services in healthcare, education and research.

A national medical science park and a 1,000-bed bio-hospital will be set up on 55 acres. It would be a research and training centre that would concentrate on developing treatment methodologies with detailed focus on regenerative medicine.

With a total cost of Rs 150 crore, the animal lab and the research and training centre are likely to be finished by the end of the existing year.

Other projected centres include a general hospital, a medical college and a geriatric centre.
The medical tourism would generate income for the bio-hospital, which is expected to provide tertiary care in all sub-specialities of medicine.

It will also be backed by modern basic sciences including stem cell technology, tissue engineering and nanatechnology.
Dr. Naresh Trehan promoted the concept in Gurgaon, near Delhi. Fortis Healthcare is now contemplating a medicity in Gurgaon.
