Museum in Amsterdam show history of the evening purseCologne, Germany - An Amsterdam museum is set to launch an exhibition in late November highlighting the history of the evening purse or clutch bag - an item deemed essential by women especially those preparing for an upcoming ball or banquet.

Starting November 22 and running through March 1, 2009, the show called "It's All Glamour and Glitter" will be held in Amsterdam's museum of purses, the Dutch Tourist Office said in Cologne. Evening purses from the last 100 years will be on show including many sparkling with sequins, rhinestones and crystal beads.

There also will be a few exclusive designer creations by Cartier, Valentino, Christian Lacroix and Gucci. One eye-catcher is the Cupcake, a purse in the shape of a cake designed by Judith Leiber. A version of the purse became world renowned through a short television appearance in Sex and the City.

The museum, which opened in 2007, is dedicated to the development of the purse from the 16th century until the present. The standing exhibit shows the developments in purse style over the years. The accessory at first was not just for women as most men carried a handbag before there were pockets in trousers and coats. (dpa)
