Coronary CTA Can Accurately Diagnose Patients Having Low or Moderate Chest Pain

It has been found that results from the keenly anticipated PROMISE clinical trial presented at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Annual Scientific Sessions in San Diego confirmed that coronary computed tomographic angiography (coronary CTA) is capable of accurately diagnosing patients having low to moderate chest pain.

Coronary CTA is an imaging method that uses a computed tomography (CT) scanner to non-invasively and painlessly examine the structure and blood vessels of the heart.

According to cardiologists and radiologists, in most of the cases, coronary CTA is at least as effective as diagnostic methods such as stress test or SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging.

Folic Acid Supplements Could Lower Stroke Risk in People with High Blood Pressure

According to a new Chinese study, there is a possibility that folic acid supplements might help cut risk of stroke and particularly for patients affected by high blood pressure.

According to experts, women during pregnancy commonly take folic acid supplements in order to keep neural birth defects at bay. For the study, the researchers decided to track the results of over 20,000 patients in China. It has been informed that these patients were affected by high blood pressure and they did not have any previous history of a heart attack or stroke.

Clinical Trial proves Efficacy and Safety of AstraZeneca Heart Drug Brilinta

New anti-clotting drug Brilinta, developed by AstraZeneca, has produced promising results over its efficacy and safety in a clinical trial. Led by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School cardiologist Dr. Marc Sabatine, the study involved over 21,000 individuals in 31 countries. The drug was administered in all of them and survival rate after a heart attack within the last three years was 100% for all of them.

Sabatine said the benefits of the drug were found to be consistent in the individual components of heart health events and in all the major subgroups of patients.

Novel Class of Experimental Drugs may reduce Risk of Cardiovascular Problems

On the basis of preliminary evidence, researchers stated that a new class of experimental drugs, one being developed by Amgen and the other by Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, might be able to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

These drugs are said to be already known to significantly reduce bad cholesterol. In fact, there are some cases in which these drugs have reduced the cholesterol level to an extent not even achieved by statins.

However, earlier it was not known whether these drugs are able to protect heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular problems. The early results do indicate that they might be able to do so. The manufacturers have sponsored small studies.

Federal Officials Warn not to Approach closer than 500 Yards of Right Whales

A new program has been started to find out the best way to tag the endangered whales for satellite tracking. Under this program, scientists tagged three right whales this past winter.

To get closer to whales to tag them, the researchers held a federal permit. Others who do not have the permit have to maintain a distance. On Friday, federal officials warned that spring breakers and others should not come closer than 500 yards of a right whale.

A right whale comes under endangered species. It is considered that its number would be around 450 to 500 whales around the world. This year, right whales have given birth to 17 calves. Right whales and their calves continue to migrate along Southeastern Florida, including the Space Coast News.
