Allahabad, Dec 24 : The family members of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and educationist Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya on Wednesday expressed their delight over the decision to confer them Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award.
"It is a little late but at least his name has been considered for the award. It is a moment of great happiness. I thank the Indian Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this," said Vajpayee's niece Veena.
Another niece of Vajpayee, Karuna Shukla, also hailed the decision.
New Delhi, Dec 22 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Najma Heptullah on Monday welcomed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's statement on conferring the Bharat Ratna on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
"If Omar Abdullah has said this then it is a good thing. It is right, Vajpayeeji should get Bharat Ratna. He has been in politics for so long, he has been in the ruling as well as in the opposition, he was a good Prime Minister, he has been a good parliamentarian," Heptullah told ANI here.
Earlier today, Omar Abdullah had tweeted that the UPA government should have risen above politics and conferred the Bharat Ratna to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Regarded as one of the pillars of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vajpayee has been a stalwart in the Indian political arena for over six decades.
Vajpayee served as the tenth Prime Minister of India, three times - first for a brief term of 13 days in 1996, and then for two terms from 1998 to 2004.

A cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan late Monday decided that a bill for establishing an institute for good governance and public administration and research will be tabled in the next session of the assembly.
The blueprint of the institute will be prepared separately, an official release said.

Congress MP Beni Prasad had made derogatory remarks against Vajpayee.
Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded an apology from Verma for using such remarks.
New Delhi, Nov 27 : Hundreds of Muslim protesters gathered near the Jama Masjid Friday and burnt effigies of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders L. K. Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who were indicted by the Liberhan commission for razing of the Babri Masjid. They demanded the arrest of those responsible for the 1992 demolition.
The demonstration was held by Real Cause, an NGO, and came three days after the Liberhan Commission report was tabled in parliament.

New Delhi, Nov 23 - A senior official of the Liberhan Commission of Inquiry said he was "astonished" at a media report linking Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the 1992 Babri mosque razing.
Anupam Gupta, counsel for the commission that was set up soon after the mosque was demolished in 1992, told NDTV channel that Vajpayee was the only BJP leader who was not connected to the mosque razing and what came to be known as the Ayodhya movement.
"Of all the top ranking leaders of the Sangh Parivar who were summoned and examined? Vajpayee was not one of them," he said.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on Saturday, was taken to AIIMS for a routine health check up.
The 84-year-old Vajpayee has been admitted to AIIMS nearly three weeks after getting discharged from the hospital.
Dr. D K Sharma, Medical Superintendent AIIMS, said, “He will stay in the hospital for two days during which these follow-up tests will be conducted for him.”
The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was admitted to AIIMS Feb 3 following complaints of a chest infection.
New Delhi, Mar 21 : Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Saturday underwent a regular medical check-up at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) here.
Vajpayee was admitted on Friday evening, three weeks after he was discharged from the same hospital. He will be discharged on Sunday.
According to hospital officials, the BJP leader has been admitted in the hospital for routine follow up and investigations.
New Delhi, Feb 23 : Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is undergoing treatment for a chest infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), is reported to be showing signs of steady improvement.
"Today someone read out the newspaper to him. It is a daily practice. He watches TV and also spends time listening to good classical and old film music," Dr Sampath Kumar, Chief of Cardio Thoracic Vascular Sciences Department at AIIMS, said on Monday.
"Once we are satisfied about his recovery, we will discharge him, Kumar added.
