PETA activists protest against illegal slaughter in Chennai

PETA activists protest animal deaths in the national capitalChennai, Feb 3 : Activists of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Tuesday converged at the on-going India International Leather Fair here to stage a protest against the network of illegal slaughtering.

Effigies depicting carcasses of livestock such as cows, sheep, buffaloes and pigs placed in coffins were placed at the spot of the protest to create awareness about the illegal animal skin being made into purses, shoes and jackets.

Incidentally, these are the leather items, which are being sold at the fair.

Jaisimha, the campaign manager of PETA mentioned that there is very little check on the criminal abuse of animals in the country and most of the slaughter houses are illegal, causing grave cruelty to the animals.

"Majority of these animals are killed in slaughter houses that are not registered and which do not function legally. So, there is no accounting system. There is no system in which we can figure out whether ''X'' leather comes from a ''Y'' slaughterhouse and how the animal was treated before slaughter. So in such an unorganized sector the leather industry animals continue to suffer," said Jaisimha, Campaign Manager, PETA.

The protesting activists also urged upon the visitors at the fair to opt for non-leather alternatives like synthetic by contending ''Leather is Murder''

In India, millions of animals are being illegally killed for hides and skins.

Founded in 2000, PETA India is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. This forum operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment.

PETA India educates policy-makers and the public about animal abuse and promotes an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. (ANI)
