President greets nation on Makara Sankranti, Pongal
New Delhi, Jan 12 : President Pratibha Patil today greeted the nation on the occasion of Makara Sankranti and Pongal, which will be celebrated on January 13 and January 14 respectively.
In her message, Patil said, "On the occasion of Makara Sankranti and Pongal, the nation acknowledges with gratitude the hard work of our farmers and those millions of people living in our rural areas."
"Makara Sankranti and Pongal are also festivals that spread the messages of friendship, harmony and unity. On these festive occasions, I extend my greetings to the people of the country and wish them success, happiness and prosperity," the President added.
Makar Sankranti and Pongal are harvest festivals.
Makara Sankranti marks the commencement of the sun''s journey to the Northern Hemisphere (Makara raasi), signifying the onset of "Uttarayana Punyakalam", and is a day of celebration all over the country. The day begins with people taking dips in the holy waters and worshipping the Sun.
Pongal is a celebration of the prosperity associated with the harvest by thanking the rain, sun and the farm animals that have helped in the harvest. It is celebrated by Tamils. (ANI)
