Shah Rukh Khan to visit Aligarh Muslim University

"Shah Rukh recently had expressed his desire to interact with the varsity students. In this regard he even contacted the varsity's vice chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis," AMU official spokesperson Rahat Abrar told reporters in this Utar Pradesh town, some 300 km from state capital Lucknow.
AMU teacher receives Scientist of the Year Award-2009

Aligarh, Dec 30 : Riaz Ahmad, a teacher at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been conferred the Scientist of the Year Award-2009 by the National Environment Science Academy in New Delhi, an AMU spokesperson said Wednesday.
"The award carried a gold medal and a plaque as a token of appreciation for the contributions of Riaz Ahmad in the area of biochemical and molecular genetics," AMU's assistant public relations officer Zeeshan Ahmad told reporters in Aligarh.

Aligarh, Dec 22 : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Tuesday announced that it will confer an honorary doctorate degree on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi among other distinguished personalities.
The decision to award the D. Lit (Honoris Causa) was taken Tuesday by the university's executive council, an AMU spokesperson said.
Seismic observatory set up at AMU

Aligarh, Dec 19 :Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis Saturday inaugurated a broadband seismological observatory in the geology department to monitor seismic activity in the Indo-Gangetic plains region.
The project, undertaken by the Hyderabad-based National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) with financial assistance from the ministry of earth sciences, aims to monitor seismic activities from Gwalior to Moradabad by setting up broadband seismic stations at approximately 50 km apart at Gwalior, Dholpur, Agra, Aligarh, Narora and Moradabad.
AMU ties up with Indonesian institute

Aligarh, Dec 15 : The Aligarh Muslim University Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indonesia's Darussalam Institute of Islamic Studies to jointly organise conferences and cultural programmes and exchange faculty members.
These two institutes agree to organise conferences, seminars and scientific discussions on various issues including developing curriculum on Islamic Studies, Shariah, Arabic language and Islamic heritage and bringing the social and human sciences into an Islamic perspective.

Aligarh, Dec 5 : Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will visit the Aligarh Muslim University Monday to interact with students and teachers, a university official said Saturday.
Visiting the institution at the invitation of Vice Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis, Gandhi will interact with students from various faculties, hostels and university-maintained schools at the Kennedy Auditorium from 9.15 a. m. Monday, the university spokesman said.
He will pay floral tributes at the tomb of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of the university, and will also meet the university teachers at the AMU Staff Club.
AMU revokes suspension of 18 students

Aligarh, Dec 2 : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has revoked the suspension of 18 students after warning them to exhibit good conduct in future.
This follows the recommendation of the Disciplinary Committee of the university.
The students had been found guilty of misconduct and indiscipline and were suspended Nov 4-5.(IANS)
AMU poet wins prestigious award

Aligarh, Nov 25 : The Gangadhar National Award for poetry, instituted by Sambalpur University, has gone to A. M. K. Shahryar, a noted poet and formerly of the Urdu department in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The Sambalpur University instituted the award in the memory of eminent Orissa poet Gangadhar Meher (1862-1924). It carries a cash prize of Rs. 50,000, a shawl and a citation.
AMU may re-open Dec 1: Vice chancellor

"Going by the present situation and conditions prevailing on the campus and outside, the varsity in all possibilities may re-open on December 1," Abdul Azis told IANS on phone from Delhi.
"By Monday, we would make a final announcement regarding the re-opening of the university," he said.
According to sources, the decision to re-open the varsity was taken in consultation with the HRD ministry officials during a meeting in Delhi.
AMU to have 250-acre branch in Bihar

Aligarh, Nov 14 - The centre of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Bihar would come up in 250 acres, instead of 100 acres now, as the Bihar government has allotted an additional 150 acres of land free to the varsity.
"We have received an official communique from the Bihar government over the free of cost allotment of the additional land," AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told reporters in this Utar Pradesh town, some 300 km from state capital Lucknow.
"In the letter, the Bihar government has also emphasised on early opening of the varsity's centre," he added.

Aligarh, Nov 6 - The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has suspended 12 more students for delivering inflammatory speeches, disrupting the academic atmosphere and manhandling varsity officials during their protests against the murder of a student, an official said Friday.
With this suspension ordered Thursday evening, a total of 18 students have been placed under suspension for their violent agitation last week over the killing of a final year B. Sc student Shahnawaz Alam who was shot dead Oct 25.

Aligarh, Nov 5 - The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has suspended six students for indulging in violence, assaulting varsity officials and disrupting academic activities during protests against the murder of a student, the university said Thursday.
"The students were suspended for indulging in violence and vandalism. They have been barred from entering the campus," AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told reporters in Aligarh, some 300 km from Lucknow.
The decision was taken Wednesday.

Aligarh, Nov 2 : Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of a final year B. Sc student and the alleged role of politicians in the case, an official said Monday.
"We have today (Monday) faxed a letter to the central government, seeking a CBI probe into the murder," Mujahid Beg, an AMU professor and member of the varsity's executive council, told reporters in Aligarh, western Uttar Pradesh, about 300 km from state capital Lucknow.

Aligarh, Oct 31 : A day after the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was temporarily closed following prolonged student unrest over a murder, some students on a hunger strike Saturday refused to withdraw their agitation till the vice chancellor is removed.
Meanwhile, the administration Saturday claimed that students were leaving the campus for their home towns.
Five AMU Centres To Come Up In The Country

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is all set to set up five special academic centres across the country to offer traditional and job oriented courses.
In this regard, AMU has already got the final nod from the varsity’s Academic Council on Monday.
The new centres will be established in Murshidabad (West Bengal); Katihar (Bihar); Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh); Pune (Maharashtra) and Mallappuram (Kerala).
The university (AMU) is making discussions with the related states in order to open up special centres of the varsity.

Aligarh, Oct 18 : Vice President Hamid Ansari today asked Muslims to “seek equity, not concessions” from the government, and said that the community should introspect as a failure to participate in India’s growth story will lead to its marginalisation.
Addressing a gathering of over 500 Aligarh Muslim University alumni from as many as 20 countries, Ansari said the Muslim community should adapt to changing requirements of time and pointed out the need to draw every segment including women into the sphere of education.
Ragpicker critically injured in Aligarh bomb blast

Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), Oct. 8 : A rag picker was critically injured on Wednesday after a country-made bomb exploded in a crowded locality of Aligarh.
The victim, Shakeel, along with his friend, were searching for steel scrap in the garbage before noon in the Abbas Nagar locality when they found the bomb in a gunny bag, police said.
The bomb exploded as they were fiddling with it.
Shakeel was battling for his life at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in the city, when reports last came in. (ANI)
Aligarh Muslim University signs MOU with seven US Universities

AMU Vice-Chancellor Professor P K Abdul Aziz informed during a gathering of members of Aligarh Alumni Association (AAA) of Metropolitan Washington, “The academic standard of AMU is showing an upward trend and plans are underway to upgrade research, library facilities and infrastructure of the university.”
Rahat Abrar, who is the spokesperson of AMU reported, “The academic tie-up will help us in providing better career opportunities to our students.”
It has been learnt that the academic exchange program will commence from next year.
Students told to vacate hostel by Aligarh University Officials
Submitted by Piyush Diwan on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 03:47.Aligarh Muslim University has been closed sine die following protests against the killing of a student. Mohammad Mazhar Naeem was stabbed twice in head and died. The victim was a resident of Meerut and was a second year BSc student.
The residence of vice-chancellor was set on fire residence. Severe damage was done to staff room by protesting students. Other offices in the university were also attacked.
As per the Police reports, the University VC Mr. P K Abdul Aziz was not present at his residence while the incident took place.
