RGIPT to set up third ‘fire & safety’ centre near Bangalore

RGIPT-logoRajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) will set up its third `fire & safety' centre for petroleum sector near Bangalore.

The upcoming centre, which will be set up at a cost of Rs 355 crore, will work on developing fire and safety technologies for the oil and gas sector.

D. M. Reddy, president of RGIPT, said that the institute had already partnered with Texas A&M University for getting technical assistance as well as faculty.

Union Oil & Gas Minister M. Veerappa Moily justify the selection of Bangalore for the new centre, saying the city is home to IT & research centers of various global energy companies.

Speaking on the topic, Mr. Moily said, "Global energy companies have set up their IT and research base in the city and we felt it appropriate to be amongst them. Also, proximity to an international airport makes it easier for global experts to frequent the institute."

The Government of Karnataka has given 200 acres of land near Bangalore for the upcoming `fire & safety' centre. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the move and added that the government had agreed to go for clean energy (CNG-based projects) along the Mumbai-Bangalore corridor and declared it a `Green Corridor'.

Siddaramaiah added that Karnataka Government was mulling plans to purchase new buses under JNNURM scheme and gradually launch new CNG-based buses in a phased manner.
