Saudi couple ties the knot - after 80 years

Saudi couple ties the knot - after 80 years Riyadh - Nearly eight decades on, Mohammed Eid has, at 97, married the girl he fell in love with as a teenager in Saudi Arabia.

According to tribal traditions a girl can only marry one of her cousins within the tribe - so Eid had to look elsewhere. He married twice, and had 42 children and grandchildren.

But when his wife died a year ago, he found his mind straying back to his youthful romance, the London-based Arabic daily al-Hayat reported Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the couple finally tied the knot. His new wife, whose name was withheld from the report because of tribal custom, had been married six times before, but never had children.

The couple planned to hold a party, with Eid's "few surviving" friends assuring him they would attend - alongside the 42 children and grandchildren. (dpa)
