Sensex Plunges 340.99 Pts; Jaiparkash, ICICI Bank Among Major Losers @ 14:44 hrsDue to continued selling action in several blue chip stocks, the Sensex remained weak during late afternoon trade today.

Stocks cutting across sectors have taken a beating and those from banking, realty, information technology and metal stocks were among the worst hit.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap index fell 2.25% and 2.44% respectively.

Among the sectoral indices, BSE Bankex plummeted 6.25%, BSE Realty tumbled 6.22%, IT declined 5.46% and Metal came down by 5.23%.

The 30-share index, BSE Sensex, today (Jan 15), opened with a loss of 272.41 points, at 9,098.08.

At 02.44 p.m., the 30-share index Sensex stood at 9,029.50, down 340.99 points, after hitting a high of 9,123.78 and a low of 8,946.62.

Meanwhile the broad based Nifty was down 105.60 points at 2,729.70 after touching a high of 2,832.30 and a low of 2,701.75.

The overall market breadth was sharply negative as it had 572 advancements as against 1,699 declinations.

The biggest losers in the Sensex were Jaiprakash Associates (8.74%), ICICI Bank (7.99%), Sterlite Industries (India) (7.36%), Tata Steel (6.68%), HDFC Bank (6.06%) and Tata Motors (5.93%).

There were no gainers at the 30-share index.
