Abu Salem appears before Bhopal court in fake passport case

Bhopal, Nov 13: Underworld don Abu Salem was produced before a local court here today in connection with a fake passport case.

He was brought to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Ajay Srivastava amidst tight security after he arrived here from Mumbai this morning.

The Bhopal District Court, in September, had issued production warrant for Salem to Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail Superintendent in the fake passport case.

Salem’s companion Monica Bedi had been acquitted three months ago in the same case, in which his wife Rubina Beg is one of the five accused.

A case was registered against all the five – Salem, Monica, Rubina and two associates -- for issuing passports in assumed names in 2001.

Salem's lawyer P C Bedi has appealed to the court to send the don back to Mumbai after the hearing, and not to send him to judicial custody.

“I have raised an objection that this case does not feature in extradition papers. This offence was registered against him much before, and it doesn't come under Section 21 of the Extradition Act, " said P C Bedi.

Salem, 37, and Monica Bedi were extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005. He is wanted in 54 cases ranging from murder to extortion. (ANI)
