Elections in five phases

The Election Commission on Monday announced five-phase polling starting April 16 for the 15th Lok Sabha. The model code of conduct comes into effect immediately.

The voting dates are April 16, April 23, April 30, May 7 and May 13 while counting will be held on May 16. The new LS has to be constituted by June 2, said CEC N Gopalaswami.

The first LSpolls to be held after delimitation, polling in 499 of the 543 seats would be held on the basis of delimited constituencies. The total electorate is roughly 71.4 crore, an increase of 4.3 crore since 2004.
