Militants attack political leaders and workers in Manipur

ManipurImphal, Mar 22 : In order to threaten the political parties to stay away from the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the cadres of Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) are targeting the Congress leaders in Manipur.

Bishnupur District Congress Committee President Waikhom Maipak Singh was shot at on March 10 night at his residence at Lairenkabi in Bishnupur.

Militants also fired three bullets at the residence of Tilotama Devi, President, Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee at Singjamei Liwa Lambi Road on March 14.

In yet another incident, two Congress workers in Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency, Kh. Mohindro Singh, and L. Ibomcha Singh was allegedly abducted and shot before being released.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly condemned the attacks on its workers, which have created panic in the state.

Expressing regret on the situation Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaikhangam said, "There is something one cannot understand and very unfortunate and we take it very seriously. We had emergency executive meeting reviewing the prevailing present situation."

N. Sanahanbi Devi, Joint Secretary, Oinam Meira Paibi Lup said, "Militants are harming and killing civilians and it is our appeal that they should not frighten the people anymore."

Talking about the unfortunate situation in the state, Devananda Singh, a local resident said, "We are really concerned and unhappy about the incident and it is our stand that we will not allow such things to happen again. We will request militants not to enter and disturb our villages."

As the elections are nearing, the militants are trying to create a fear psychosis amongst political leaders and workers. However, the militant attacks fail to affect the election campaigns in the state. (ANI)
