Environmental Group sues US EPA over demise of Monarch Butterfly

An environmental group on Friday sued the US government, blaming the regulators of discounting herbicide that has resulted in the decline of monarch butterfly population.

Following the complaint, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in US District Court in New York.

The suit has stated that the agency didn't pay any attention to the warnings about the dangers of glyphosate to monarchs. Glyphosate is a key ingredient of a commonly used herbicide and is generally used in the Monsanto Co's Roundup and other herbicides.

The lawsuit has stated that Federal law wants EPA to make sure that the pesticides it approves will not cause any 'unreasonable adverse effects on the environment, including wildlife'.

Washington - Two US astronauts will go ahead with a spacewalk this weekend despite a flaw in one of the spacesuits that allowed water to seep into the helmet, the US space agency NASA said Friday.

Mission managers made the decision after discussing what NASA called "the minor seepage of water into the helmet of Expedition 42 Flight Engineer Terry Virts of NASA following the last spacewalk on February 25."

Virts had finished his six-plus hour spacewalk and was back inside the crew lock section of the Quest airlock when he noticed water building up in his helmet and felt dampness on the back of his head.

Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D may control brain serotonin

Washington: Eating fish and soaking up some sun may protect brain health, a new study suggests.

Vitamin D and marine omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the symptoms associated with a broad array of brain disorders by controlling brain serotonin, scientists say.

In a previous study, researchers found that vitamin D regulates the conversion of the essential amino acid tryptophan into serotonin and this may influence the development of autism, particularly in developing children with poor vitamin D status.

Serotonin affects a wide-range of cognitive functions and behaviours including mood, decision-making, social behaviour, impulsive behaviour, and even plays a role in social decision-making by keeping in check aggressive social responses or impulsive behaviour.
