BBC producer to prove that George Mallory climbed Everest first

London, Oct.1 : A BBC producer has expressed his determination to prove that George Mallory, and not New Zealander Edmund Hillary and his Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, was the first to reach the summit of the over 29,000 feet high Mt. Everest.

Graham Hoyland will tell the Royal Geographical Society this week how George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were the first men on Everest in 1924.

Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit in 1953.

Mallory's frozen body was recovered in 1999, 75 years after he started out on his expedition.

Karunanidhi goes on day-long fast over Sethusamudram project

Chennai, Oct 1 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is on a day-long hunger strike today demanding early completion of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project.

Leaders of other parties of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) are also observing the fast.

Karunanidhi's decision to go on a fast came soon after the Supreme Court on Sunday stayed today's shutdown call given by his party Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) led ruling alliance in Tamil Nadu.

Ex-chess world champ Kasparov to contest Russian presidential polls

London, Oct.1 : Former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, the driving force behind a Russian opposition campaign to remove President Vladimir Putin from office, was last night selected to be its presidential candidate.
According to The Telegraph, Kasparov received 379 out of 498 votes cast at a National Congress held in Moscow.

The Russia's presidential election in which Mr Putin is constitutionally barred from standing, will take place in March 2008.

Telecom Companies running for Licenses

Department of Telecom has received over 250 applications for Unified Access Services Licences (UASL) by telecom operators in various sectors. The number is expected to go up to 350 as the deadline for applying of telecom licenses expires this Monday. The companies seeking licenses include HFCL, Shyam Telelink, Unitech, Hindujas, Omaxe group, DLF Developers and Sify to name a few.
