New Delhi  - At least three people were killed and 26 injured when three blasts struck busy market places and other areas in Guwahati, the main city of India's north-east Assam state Thursday, police said.

"There were three bombings across Guwahati in which three people died and upto 26 were injured. Four of the injured are in a critical condition," Assam police chief GM Srivastava told reporters.

The first blast took place in Birubari, a residential area at 2.30 pm local time (9 am GMT), injuring two people.

The explosion was followed by another blast in a vegetable market in the Bhutnath area at 5.15 pm, wounding another 20 people.

New Delhi - At least five people were killed and 51 wounded when suspected separatist rebels carried out three blasts in Guwahati, the main city of India's north-east Assam state Thursday, officials said.

"There were three low-intensity bombings across Guwahati in which five people died. Fifty one people were wounded out of which 15 are in a serious condition," Deba Bora, spokesman of the Assam government told reporters.

Guwahati, Jan 1 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram will visit Assam today to review the security situation in the State.

During his visit, he will meet Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and the Unified Command to know about the present security scenario.

Issues like the establishment of a National Security Guard (NSG) hub at Guwahati, cross-border terrorism along Bangladesh boundary and strengthening of intelligence network among the North-eastern states are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

The Assam government has made it clear that the avian influenza has spread to new areas of the state.

Sources in the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department said that the deadly bird flu virus was confirmed in about 15 more villages. The health authorities have been asked to cull nearly 70,000 birds in these areas.

Speaking on this, a veterinary department official said, “So far about 150 villages in eight Assam districts were hit by bird flu and Rapid Response Teams have already slaughtered about 510,000 chickens and ducks since November 27.”

The series of blasts on October 30 at four places in Assam, including Guwahati will now be investigated by the CBI The state government had set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an inspector general of police (IGP), to investigate the serial explosions, but despite 11 arrests, the SIT was unable to make any headway in the case. The decision to handover the investigation into the serial blasts and the ethnic violence, to the CBI was taken after an all-party meeting convened by the state Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
