London, Sept 6 : A British student who fell off her horse and broke her leg in a remote part of eastern Russia was airlifted to safety – after her distress signal was picked up 3,700 miles away by an RAF base in Scotland.

Kimberley Warren, a second year zoology student at Nottingham University, fell off her horse during a research trip in the Kamchatka region in the far east of the country.

She then activated a rescue beacon on the night of September 4 which was detected by satellites monitored by the UK Mission Control Centre, based within the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre at RAF Kinloss in Moray.

London, Sept 6: Britons have voted the 1980s – the era dominated by mullet haircuts and shoulder pads – as the coolest decade in the past 50 years.

The new survey by an online sweets firm ‘A Quarter Of...’ has revealed that a third of people were at their happiest in the 80s and thought that life was better and simpler at the time.

London  - Heavy rainfall and strong winds caused flooding and severe disruption to road and rail services in southern Britain Friday, with the extreme western region of Wales worst affected.

The Atlantic weather front swept across the valleys of southern Wales, leaving streets and homes flooded and drivers stranded in their vehicles.

Belfast/London  - A massive arsenal of weapons destined for criminal gangs in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic has been recovered in a major cross-border police operation that also extended to the Netherlands, police in Belfast said Friday.

Hugh Orde, the police chief of Northern Ireland, said a total of 230 handguns, 10,000 rounds of ammunition, 450,000 euro in cash and drugs with an estimated street value of over four million euro were seized in the operation.

London - A black Labrador who became known as the "rattling dog" had 13 golf balls removed from its stomach after picking up the white balls "like truffles" when taken for walks on a golf course in Scotland, it was reported Friday.

Owner Chris Morrison had been taking five-year-old Oscar round a golf course in Dunfermline, north of Edinburgh, for several months when he became concerned about a rattling sound emanating from the pet's stomach.

London, September 5: A new study has indicated that a star in a distant solar system may have thrown the building blocks of life our way, which were then caught by our star – the Sun.

Previous studies into whether material could travel between solar systems predicted that such an exchange would be unlikely, because the speed matter would need to be traveling at to escape one star would mean it was moving too fast to be caught by another.
