Corruption allegations tarnish Spanish opposition

Spain mapMadrid - Spain's main opposition conservative People's Party (PP) was embroiled in corruption allegations Tuesday, as the party's leadership sought the resignation of one of the accused.

Arturo Gonzalez Panero, Mayor of Boadilla del Monte, near Madrid, is suspected of having bought properties in Miami with illicit money, and has come under increasing pressure to step down.

Four businessmen are in already in custody, and more than 30 other people under investigation, for bribery, influence-peddling and money-laundering in Madrid, Valencia and other locations.

Huntelaar not happy at Real Madrid

Huntelaar not happy at Real MadridMadrid  - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's agent denied Monday the Dutchman would like to leave Real Madrid barely two months after joining the club, although he admitted the forward was not happy in his current situation.

"The lad has never said he wants to leave Real Madrid. I spoke to him and I firmly deny those rumours. He has never spoken about that. He wants to play and he wants to do so at Real Madrid," agent Arnold Oosterveer said in an interview with the Italian website Calciomercato.

Spain offers help to Iran in normalizing foreign relations

Spain MapMadrid - Spain on Monday offered Iran help in normalizing its international relations after the election of Barack Obama as US president, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos held talks with Ali Larijani, chairman of the Iranian parliament, during a visit by an Iranian parliamentary delegation to Madrid.

Moratinos and Larijani discussed a "new phase" in relations with the United States, according to the communique.

Argentine president visits Spain in attempt to lower tension

Cristina Fernandez de KirchnerMadrid - Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on Monday began her first official visit to Spain amid expectations that she would try to reduce tension over the expropriation of the airline Aerolineas Argentinas from the Spanish tourism group Marsans.

King Juan Carlos welcomed Fernandez, who then received the keys to Madrid from mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon.

Fernandez was also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and to give a speech to parliament during her two- day visit.

ETA plants car bomb after separatists are barred from poll Madrid - Suspected members of the militant Basque separatist group ETA on Monday planted a car bomb in Madrid, causing material damage but no injuries, Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba confirmed.

ETA was believed to be reacting to an overnight announcement by the Supreme Court that it was barring two radical separatist formations from contesting the Basque regional elections on March 1.

The bomb exploded in front of a construction company at the Campo de las Naciones fair ground.

Barcelona captain Puyol to miss Spain-England friendly Madrid - Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will miss Wednesday's friendly between Spain and England after limping out of Barca's 3-1 home win against Sporting Gijon on Sunday, the Spanish football federation said Monday.

Puyol, 30, suffered a recurrence of the left thigh strain that he originally suffered in a cup match against Espanyol on January 29. He will be out of action for around one week.

Puyol only played against Gijon because both Gerard Pique and Rafa Marquez were suspended.
