Militants have been targeting non-local labourers for money.

The militant group Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) has claimed responsibility for the recent killing of Deepak Gupta, a shop owner in Imphal when their extortion demands were not met.

Manipur affected by general strike Imphal, Apr 2 : A Joint Action Committee (JAC) strike call here has paralysed the normal life in the state.

Most shops, markets and business establishments remained closed on Thursday in protest against the killing of three government officials.

Transport services between Manipur and neighbouring northeastern states were cancelled in view of strike.

The JAC called for the strike after the State Government failed to meet its deadline for conducting a probe into the murder of Dr. Kishan and two of his staff members.

Suspected militants hijack postal service cargo in ManipurImphal, Mar 23 : A postal service cargo, worth tens of thousands of rupees was hijacked by suspected militants of the Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) recently.

The RPF is believed to be an armed wing of the proscribed Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA).

The incident took place when the postal van was on its way to the Head Post Office in Imphal. It was intercepted by four miscreants and taken to Nepram Major in Imphal.

Militants attack political leaders and workers in Manipur

ManipurImphal, Mar 22 : In order to threaten the political parties to stay away from the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the cadres of Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) are targeting the Congress leaders in Manipur.

Bishnupur District Congress Committee President Waikhom Maipak Singh was shot at on March 10 night at his residence at Lairenkabi in Bishnupur.

Militants also fired three bullets at the residence of Tilotama Devi, President, Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee at Singjamei Liwa Lambi Road on March 14.

Women journalists discuss challenges faced in northeast

Imphal, Mar. 22 : The seventh annual conference of the National Network in Media, India (or NWMI) was held here to provide a glimpse into lives of women journalists who brave numerous difficulties in covering conflict issues.

Salma Shah and Satyamala Devi are two such Manipur based journalists, who have been highlighting the issues and problems affecting the State.

"This is really complicated being in a state like Manipur and handling all this situation by women in Manipur. It's really complicated," Shah said.
