Islamabad - Pakistani lawmakers Saturday were casting their votes to elect the successor to former president Pervez Musharraf who resigned last month to avoid impeachment in the parliament.
Asif Ali Zardari, widower of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto who heads her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) since her assassination last year, is expected to win the presidential race against the two other candidates.
Lahore, Sept 6: Even as Pakistan witnesses presidential poll today, there are two startling facts that come to one’s minds, i. e. the country has never had a woman President; and that none of the 10 Presidents was from Balochistan, one of the four provinces in Pakistan.
Of the total 10 Presidents and four governor generals Pakistan has had so far, six were from Punjab, six from Sindh and two from the NWFP, but none from Balochistan, reported the Daily Times.
Lahore, Sept 6: PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s ascendancy to the presidency seems to be a foregone conclusion as MNAs and MPAs in Pakistan cast their votes to elect the country’s next President, but chances of Zardari completing his full five year term are bleak if one goes by the country’s political history.
In the past 61 years after Separation, none of the seven presidents Pakistan had, could complete his full five year term.
Miranshah (Pakistan), Sept 6: Four children, a woman and a man were killed in Pakistan’s Miranshah tribal area when a suspected US drone hit two houses here on Friday morning.
Miranshah is located on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan.
“Three missiles were fired from a drone that hit two houses. Four children, a woman and a man have been killed in the attack,” the Daily Times quoted Pakistan intelligence officials as saying on condition of anonymity.
Lahore, Sept 6 : Pakistan will soon get four AWACS aircraft from China and four SAAB-2000 aircraft from Sweden, the country’s Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed said here last evening.
Both the types of aircraft will be state-of-the-art surveillance aircraft.
Besides, talks were also underway for the purchase of 30 to 40 FC-20 aircraft from China, the Daily Times quoted him as saying.
Islamabad, Sept 6 : The daughter of PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Bakhtawar has revealed that her father had repeatedly urged her slain mother Benazir Bhutto to delay her Pakistan return, but the latter didn’t relent and was adamant on returning to her home country as she had spent 10 years in-exile.
She also said that her father taking the oath as the country’s President would be like a “revenge” for her mother’s killing.
