Maruti launches A-Star

Maruti launches A-StarThe largest Indian passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki, launched a new car model A-Star on Wednesday. A-Star is developed at the Manesar facility of the company and it is the fifth model in A2 segment. The car would also be exported in Europe, Middle East, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Africa. The company has set a target to sell 50,000 units of A-star in Indian market while one lakh units would be sold in international markets. The company is optimistic to export 2 lakh units by 2010-11.

New price set by Microsoft for $99 security suite: free

MicrosoftRecently, Microsoft announced that from June 2009, it will stop making its antivirus and security product, OneCare, and instead replace the same with a free download program called "Morro".

The good thing for users is that they will get all the services of Morro, free of cost, while, earlier for OneCare they had to pay $99, plus $US10 a year to subscribe to a virus update service.

"Morro will provide comprehensive protection from malware, including viruses, spyware, rootkits and Trojans," said Microsoft in a statement.

‘Most advanced’ processor unveiled by Intel

Intel i7 processorsIntel, the chip making leader, has launched its first quad-core solution, which it claims as its most advanced processor, for the desktop PC, achieved with 45 nanometre silicon technology.

The i7 processor, flowing from the design hitherto codenamed 'Nehalem' has taken a world record 117 points in the popular industry benchmark, SPECint, almost doubling the 'memory bandwidth' of previous Intel offerings in this class.

Floods Beneath Antarctica’s Ice Sheet Create a Glacial Slip-and-Slide

Antarctic ice sheetA new study, that involved tracking of recent floods beneath the Byrd Glacier, has claimed that deep beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, floods of water from buried lakes can hurry glaciers along on their slow slide towards the sea. According to Andy Smith of the British Antarctic Survey, who was not involved in this latest study, "It's like putting in a squirt of oil. The water lubricates the base of the glacier."

Canada’s health-care spending growing faster than economy

Canada Health CareGoing by the latest figures released, Canada's health care spending is growing faster than the economy, outpacing inflation and population growth. Representing 10.7 per cent of the gross domestic product, health care spending has reached $171.9 billion or $5,170 per person, the highest share ever recorded in Canada.

When it comes to province-wise per-person spending, the figures for Alberta and Manitoba stand at $5,730 and $5,555 respectively. The provinces that spend the lowest are Quebec at $4,653 and British Columbia at $5,093.
