Physical Activities help Elderly People live Long

A new research has again stressed on the need of engaging into daily physical activities to keep life-threatening diseases at bay. The research has claimed that elderly men who exercise for at least 30 minutes a day are likely to live for longer than those who do not indulge themselves in physical activities.

The study also showed that men in this age group sought benefits of doing even small amount of exercise comparable to those of giving up smoking.

For the study, the researchers recruited thousands of men born between 1923 and 1932. They all were given health checkups and provided information about the lifestyle they followed and their involvement in physical activity.

Backyard Chickens safe from Bird Flu Outbreak

Seven hens in Des Moines have been laying a colorful array of brown, white and green eggs. Backyard hen operations have surged in a number of states, including Iowa, as people want to know where the eggs come from. Owners of the hens claimed that their backyard eggs are richer in nutrients and also taste better than the commercial counterparts.

But the earlier bird flu outbreak in the country especially across the Midwest and concern has been growing that such operations could be at risk of contracting the deadly virus.

SB 277 Measure passes California Senate

On Thursday, the controversial vaccine exemption bill has been approved in the California Senate. According to reports, now the supporters of the bill have been confident that the bill will also succeed in clearing the Assembly and will be signed into law soon.

The vaccine exemption bill was introduced by Democratic Senators Richard Pan from Sacramento, and Ben Allen from Santa Monica. It was introduced after measles outbreak in December last year at Disneyland that sickened more than 125 people in California. On Thursday, the bill managed to get 25-10 vote after the senators decided to compromises aimed at easing its passage.

Zebra Fish produces Chemical similar to Melanin in Humans

A team of researchers from Oregon State University (OSU) have found that zebra fish produces a substance called gadusol. The researchers affirmed that the chemical is quite similar to melanin found in humans.

Study’s lead researcher Taifo Mahmud, a professor at the OSU College of Pharmacy, was of the view that humans and mammals cannot produce this compound. It shall however, be noted that it has been found in other species of animals.

The genetics of gadusol cross many different animals. The researchers found that the gene needed to produce gadusol is quite similar to the one found in algae. The researchers were of the view that gadusol is an important gene that is being passed down through hundreds of millions of years of evolution.

Six Sea Turtles Released back into Wild

On Thursday, the South Carolina Aquarium organized its first sea turtle release event of the summer season. Six sea turtles were released back into the sea off the coast of South Carolina.

Out of six, five were considered to be among the most endangered species of sea turtles in the world. The releases included a green turtle and five Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. These turtles are not only critically endangered and are also the rarest sea turtles in the world. The current release has taken the total number of sea turtles to be released up to 163.

First Sea Turtle Nests of the Season found on beaches of South Carolina

The Department of Natural Resources revealed that first sea turtle nests of the season have been spotted on beaches in South Carolina. According to reports, about 17 sea turtle nests have been found in May and most of them were in Beaufort County.

The department reported that first nest was discovered on May 1 on Botany Island. According to wildlife officials, this year's summer, thousands of nests will be found along the shoreline of the state.

The Fripp Island Turtle Team found three sea turtle nests on the island since Tuesday. Janie Lackman, leader of the team, said that finding the nests is like finding buried treasure. When a nest is discovered by a team, it is reported to the Department of Natural Resources. After that, the nest is staked off so that it's not disturbed.
