‘Exploding Head Syndrome’ affects 1 in Every 5 at Some Point in their Lives

A research published in the Journal of Sleep Research unveiled that ‘exploding head syndrome’ affects one-fifth of college students.

The syndrome involves hearing sudden, loud noises when affected people go to sleep and wake up. Not much is known about the condition, but one thing has become clear that it not affects older people, but people of other age as well.

Researchers from Washington State University carried out a study on 211 students. They were assessed for having the syndrome and sleep paralysis. Out of them, 18% were reported of having the syndrome at least once.

New test can accurately predict which child will become nearsighted

A new study has revealed that sitting in front or near the TV does not make children nearsighted.

Nearsightedness or myopia typically develops between age eight and 12 years. The problem affects one-third of adults.

According to the study, a new test can accurately predict if a child will become nearsighted. According to the researchers, their current refractive error, or eyeglasses prescription can be used to detect the problem.

According to Karla Zadnik, dean of the College of Optometry at Ohio State University and lead author of the study, children hardly reveal their parents that they can't see the board in class. Also, the letter-chart screening tests used by schools and pediatricians are nor ideal.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness has expressed its sadness over the crash of Germanwings Flight 9525. It gave condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy.

It has been said that the co-pilot crashed the plane as he suffered from depression and developed suicidal tendencies. A German prosecutor has most recently reported that the co-pilot had attended sessions of psychotherapy for an extended period of time and suicidal tendencies were noted in him.

The airline has reported that he disclosed to them in 2009 that he had a previous episode of severe depression. He received the treatment for the condition before receiving his pilot’s license.

Fish Oil may hinder Effectiveness of Chemotherapy: Study

According to a new research, published online April 2 in JAMA Oncology, fish oil supplements, and even certain fish, may hinder the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

In order to carry out the study, a team led by Emile Voest, M.D., Ph.D., of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, checked out the use of fish oil among 118 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Further, the researchers assessed fatty acid levels in 50 healthy volunteers after they consumed either fish or fish oil supplements.

There were 35 among the cancer patients, who said that they took fish oil supplements regularly, whereas 13 used supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids.

Most Packed Foods Contain Higher Than Recommended Salt Content

A new report released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that most of the packed foods that are sold in grocery stores contain excessive salts.

The report stated that salt content in those products is lighter than the amount recommended under the federal guidelines.

The researchers from CDC are presently trying to understand why some areas have more cases of hypertension than others.

And as researchers were not able to determine whether location is linked to hypertension, they decided to chose another approach and look at the levels of slat in packaged foods in different locations.

Researchers find that Babies learn from the Unexpected

According to a new study by the Johns Hopkins University, babies learn from the unexpected. The study published on Friday in the journal Science found that babies born with some natural smarts, but young people learn about the world when their natural intelligence is challenged.

The study was conducted by cognitive psychologists Aimee E. Stahl and Lisa Feigenson. The study included babies who could not yet talk. The babies were taken by the researchers through experiments to prove their theory. During the study, the researchers presented the babies with some situation that they could predict and some that were unexpected. The researchers gauged babies’ reactions.
